EVERYONE I know loves this book. . . I was convinced I would love it as well. My expectations were just too high for this novel but even if I didn't have those expectations I still would have not enjoyed this book! I wanted to I tried really hard but it just wasn't happening!
Maybe I'll begin on a good note, I did like the love that Cath had for Simon Snow and how dedicated she was to fanfiction writing but the good points of the novel really stop there.
The writing style in this book was distant, cold, and unrelatable which made the characters feel the same way! I couldn't get attached to or have feelings for any of the characters or their relationships, struggles, or successes. While Cath on the outside appeared to be head over heels in love with Simon Snow and the book series I felt like she didn't have any of the real aspects of a real "fangirl" instead of squealing and being excited for the final book in the series she came off like she really just wanted to beat the author and write the ending before her. Sure she had pictures on the wall and the map of the school on her ceiling but none of it seemed at all genuine! I think that if the book were written in Cath's perspective and not in 3rd person it would have been a lot more relatable
SPOILERS!!
Let's move from the author to the characters and their relationships!
First, Cath!!
So in the beginning Cath came off as a whinny brat who treated her sister like a security blanket. Other than that the first part of the novel wasn't all that bad but it wasn't entertaining at all. Its when Cath begins to have feelings for Levi and starts writing with Nick that I really begin to get annoyed.
Annoying Quotes:
Switching from her Fiction-Writing homework to Simon and Baz was like realizing she'd been driving in the wrong gear.
Ok, I used my real world experience to wrap my head around this one. I am 24 years old and out of necessity and ONLY out of necessity did I just recently learn how to drive a stick shift. In high school I did not know one person my age who knew how to drive a manual transmission!! Cath doesn't even have a car so I doubt she knows either! It wasn't until I learned to drive a stick 5 months ago did I even realize what the phrase "driving in the wrong gear meant'. This was the worst kind of analogy to use for a 17 year old female who learned to drive in the 21st century.
“Levi's eyebrows were pornographic. If Cath were making this decision just on eyebrows, she would have been "up to his room" a long time ago.”
WHAT?!?!? Who ever makes a decision about sleeping with someone because of their eyebrows. . .
When Cath wouldn't stop arguing with Levi over the laundry and him carrying it for her. . . Ok i get it Feminism and shit but really is it all that bad you made your point now just let him do something nice UGH!!!
At the end of the novel when Cath refuses to accept co-authorship for the paper she helped edit and Nick looses the award because of her I wanted to punch her in the face!! Just because you don't want your name out there you let your "friend" loose out on the award! I mean she takes it in the end but still it was pretty crappy of her!! I would have been devastated if I were Nick!
Levi,
I think I liked Levi the most out of all the characters he is chivalrous and you can tell he is falling for Cath through the whole book. Just when I was beginning to ship them he goes and kisses another girl!!! I don't think he made it obvious enough for Cath to know that he was into her and then he just gives up!
Cath and Wren's Mom
You were having one baby girl and you decide to name her Catherine. . . great name
Oh look you have twins!! Yay
Their names
Cather and Wren. . . really??
Plus you are a horrible person but your story line would have much more interesting to read than about Cath, her boy problems, and her writing drama!!
I probably should have written this review last week when I finished reading the book because now the details are being deleted from my brain but I really don't mind I just know that there was almost nothing about this book I enjoyed and that was really disappointing. Sorry again if I am way to mean in this review but I gotta be honest.
