Synopsis
Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.
Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.
Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?
Review
Jay Kristoff does an AMAZING job of building this world! The religious elements of Itreya are stunning and so detailed! The battle between the light and dark is a repeating theme in this story and makes for an engaging read. Mia battles between light and dark in herself, the battle of light and darkness in the world itself with its ever present three suns, and the battle between the Light God and the Black Mother are all examples that make Nevernight a fast paced and engaging read.
The Red Church has to be one of my all time favorite setting of any book I have read in years! It is like Hogwarts for assassins and 100x more brutal than any school you've ever read about.
The side characters are so well fleshed out and deep I fell in love with them just as much as Mia! I cannot mention the side characters without giving a special mention to Mr. Kindly a shadow deamon in the form of a cat. Shadow daemons like Mr. Kindly attach to Darkin's like Mia, he is sly and sarcastic and one of the best parts of this novel.
The Nevernight narrator adds footnotes to the book and they are hilarious! They give an in depth background to parts of the story to help the reader understand the world or just to add wit to the story, either way do not skip out on the footnotes when you pick this book up you won't be disappointed!
There are so many more things I could mention ( the slow burn romance, the intrigue, the twists and turns, the "teachers" at The Red Church, the SEX) I loved them all! I do not want to give too much more away so all I will say is YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK! I hate that I waited so long to read Nevernight BUT at least I can Binge read the rest of the series one right after the other! YESSSSS!!
