Review
I loved this mystery it was so fabulously intricate and thought out with many layers and twists!! The MC Jo while on the surface seemed naive and sheltered she truly had a need to discover the world around her and break away from the sheltered life she has been exposed to! Jo did have moments of utter thick headedness and time and time again refused to see that people no matter who they are have a chance that they might do something bad which was a bit annoying at times! Jo is a great character she has an eagerness for justice and fierce loyalty to tradition and her family!!
The gilded age New York setting was fabulous as well!! In a time when women were not supposed to talk about such things as brothels let alone walk alone at night Donnelly did an amazing jo staying true to the era!
I read this book as an ARC so I did not realize until I was done that it is close to 500 pages long but I couldn't tell in the slightest I flew through this book enjoying ever last moment! My only complaint is in the end when the mystery is getting wrapped up and all the pieces are falling into place a couple of the pieces get worked out in the last minute and it just seems way to convenient for me! Of all the people in New York she just happens to have meet two of the most important people to the mystery in the course of the book without knowing/trying. . . I don't know just seems to clean for me.
